Folio: Open Source Development for Libraries
Folio is a community
collaboration to develop an opensource library services platform
Michael Winkler
Peter Murray
Neil Block
Ole Partners are
dedicated to developing open source solutions
Issues facing
libraries
- Staffing
- Collections
- New modalities in teaching and learning
- Relevancy
- engagement
Innovation through
open source services--create a community (or communities) that can create
support and sustain innovation
Folio is: open
source, community, modern, modular, supported
Mission statement:
"stimulate innovation by making possible a vibrant community and
marketplace in which developers and libraries can participate"
Modularity like on a
cell phone with aps that can communicate and share info
Folio will share
apps with a shared infrastructure, consortia and service while protecting
private info
Has to build the
core apps: cataloguing, circulation, acquisitions, knowledge bases, link
resolvers, electronic resource management and new apps like linked open data,
research data, learning management, data mining (could this be where there are
big data? Email storage, preservation?)
People can build
apps and then share them across platforms. So in one college, they might
develop an app on social science research but all the libraries could use it.
Work with Koha and
Ole for open source and support for all ILS (Integrated Library system) that
allow choice
Libraries support
open source in the abstract but when asked about adoption, they resist more
because of the cost and difficulty of adoption
Libraries of the
past: Components in a monolithic system, discovery, cataloguing, acquisitions,
resource management
Libraries of the
future are modular with new functions that don't fit into the bounded
traditional structure
Open library
foundation (new, non profit) will work as the governing entity of moving FOLIO
forward
Within Folio, there
should be a competitive marketplace of people providing support and service.
Ebsco will be one of the service and support solutions which will provide
hosting, data migration, training, hosting, ongoing support, consultation, app
development
Timeline--maybe 2018
