first day of the semester: mistakes and motivation
Trying to incorporate more the notion that mistakes are a good thing. We learn from our mistakes. We don't need to fear them. Would like to encourage students to take more learning risks but am not really sure why they do not. . .
utter boredom?
habit?
fear?
How to overcome the blockage? How to encourage them to want to?
Similarly, each time I teach, while I'm teaching, I'm noting myself making mistakes. Realizing stuff I'm leaving out or jumps I'm making that leave students behind or just errors in my own process. For example, I was taking for granted that students would associate "it still brings chills to my spine when I think of it" with fear, but some read it as excitement. . . Need to be careful. Reading is complicated and short cuts are fraught with danger!
Maybe need to focus first on skimming the whole thing, looking for language or phrases that stand out. But does that work with most of what we read or just sensationalized? In books, we can scan chapter headings or bold sections. But what about essays . . . In What is Reading, they can scan the neat little section headings. Most readings do have clues. Students need to start with title, notes, then a quick scan.
