Notes on Worldly Philosophers The Odyssey of Albert O Hischman by Jeremy Adelman
Quote from Don Quixote: "God forgive you for the damage you have caused everyone in wishing to return to sanity this most amusing fool! Don't you realize, sir, that the benefit that might accrue from the sanity of Don Quixote will never come up to the pleasure he gives us through his follies" (p. 344).
Reminder that changing someone to fit a norm often loses more important benefits from the person being "different". And reminds us that we would benefit from focusing less on how someone is different than on the benefits of the person as he/she is. Need to focus less on changing the person to helping the person develop the ability to "act" in certain situations in ways that are less likely to cause the person harm.
Hirschman emphasized the focus on the small and the specific and observing such. Moving away from the ideas of generalized theories to specific responses to specific complexities.
Seems like many of H's economic ideas are directly relevant to what is happening with the economy today and the emphasis on austerity as a cure rather than investment
