Goal of reading

Goal of Reading: to figure out how/why what we read matters to us. Quick but problematic way to that is just read for whatever happens to speak to you and run with it. Problematic because tends not to widen our views but just cement the ones we already have; often leads to erroneous logic and thinking when we focus only on that which speaks to us and ignore the rest.
Longer but more beneficial is to figure out the argument, determine its level of validity and then test it against our own knowledge and feelings. Then we can always return to those immediate pieces that spoke to us and see if they still do or if they do so differently, but at least we will have considered something that might be different from our original thinking. .
